Golden Retriever's Emergency Surgery for Foreign Body and Intussusception, Successfully Recovered
本站 2025/2/19 11:46:52
Symptoms
This 7-month-old Golden Retriever had been showing signs of vomiting and a decreased appetite for a while. Lately, the dog’s condition worsened with a sudden drop in energy, making its owner very concerned. The dog became more lethargic and weak, and the owner quickly brought it to the hospital.

Initial Examination
Upon arrival, the dog appeared extremely weak and lethargic, showing clear signs of dehydration. Abdominal palpation revealed noticeable pain and tenderness. The dog reacted anxiously and painfully when touched, which suggested it might be in hypovolemic shock.

Diagnosis and Tests
Blood test: White blood cell count was elevated, indicating a significant inflammatory response.
X-ray: Showed considerable abdominal fluid accumulation, suggesting an internal issue.
Ultrasound: Confirmed the presence of abdominal fluid and revealed an intussusception in the intestine. The final diagnosis was a foreign body in the digestive tract, causing intussusception and secondary bacterial peritonitis.
Treatment
Given the severity of the condition, emergency abdominal surgery was recommended. During surgery, we found that the dog’s abdomen was filled with cloudy fluid, and both the intestines and peritoneum showed signs of significant inflammation. We removed a foreign object—a drinking straw—that had penetrated the intestine and caused a tear, leading to abdominal infection. In addition, the ileocecal junction showed intussusception and necrosis, which required part of the affected intestine to be removed and repaired. The abdomen was thoroughly cleaned to remove contaminants and prevent further infection.

Outcome
After surgery and effective pain management, the dog’s condition improved significantly by the second day. It regained its appetite and energy. Although abdominal fluid accumulation continued for about 10 days post-surgery, the dog eventually made a full recovery.
The dog’s owner was relieved and overjoyed to see their pet back to health. They expressed deep gratitude for the quick and effective treatment.

Takeaway

This case serves as a reminder that foreign body ingestion can lead to severe health issues for pets, including conditions like intussusception and peritonitis. Pet owners should always be cautious, ensuring that their pets don’t ingest harmful objects, whether at home or outdoors. Regular health checkups are also essential to detect potential issues early and ensure that pets remain happy and healthy.
