Monkey is a 9-year-old Poodle (Teddy), and his regular health management has always been overseen by Dr. Sun. Recently, Monkey suddenly showed signs of not being able to bear weight on his left hind leg, accompanied by severe pain. His owner noticed a clear limitation in his movement and immediately brought him to the hospital for examination. After an initial check-up, the suspicion was a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament (CCL). Further testing confirmed this diagnosis, and surgery was ultimately chosen as the treatment.
Symptom Description:
Monkey is an adorable Poodle who has been a regular patient of Dr. Sun’s since he was 2 months old for his vaccinations. Recently, his owner noticed that Monkey was unable to bear weight on his left hind leg and appeared to be in significant pain.
Initial Consultation:
Upon examination, Dr. Sun found that Monkey was walking with three legs, and his left hind leg was completely off the ground. A thorough orthopedic examination revealed tenderness around the knee joint. A cruciate ligament function test also caused severe pain in Monkey.
Diagnosis Confirmation:
Due to the pain, further examination could not be conducted while the dog was awake, so sedation was administered. After sedation, a detailed check revealed a positive result for the tibial compression test, which clearly indicated a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament. X-ray imaging of the knee joint under load showed a subluxation of the femur and tibia. The diagnosis of a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament in the left hind leg was confirmed.
Treatment Plan:
After hearing the diagnosis, the owner was understandably distressed. Dr. Sun provided a detailed explanation of the condition and treatment options. After a period of consideration, the owner decided to proceed with surgical treatment. A TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgery was scheduled, and Monkey was admitted to the hospital for the procedure.
Treatment Outcome:

Treatment Outcome:
After surgery, Monkey’s recovery from anesthesia was smooth, with no signs of vocalizing, rolling, or other pain-related symptoms. About three days post-op, Monkey began to gradually bear weight on his left hind leg while standing. Around seven days post-op, he was able to walk with all four limbs at a slow pace. After about 10 days of hospital rest and recovery, Monkey was discharged and returned home to continue his recovery. He is now full of energy and recovering very well at home.
